Developing Values, Leadership Skills, Self Respect, Community Awareness and Social Responsibility in Our Male Leaders of Tomorrow

“A Sigma Beta Club Member Should Exemplify Courtesy, Friendliness, Promptness, Trust, Understanding and High Moral Behavior at All Times…”

The Epsilon Epsilon Sigma Chapter is the proud sponsor of the Sigma Beta Club of Greater Seattle.  The Sigma Beta Club is the Official Youth Affiliate Program of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and is comprised of young men between the ages of 8 and 18 devoted to becoming the next generation of leaders.  Each participant is matched with a mentor as well as participates in the chapter’s young male development program designed to strengthen their commitment to Scholarship, Service, Cultural Awareness, Social Responsibility and Healthy Living.

The Purpose of the Sigma Beta Club

The purposes of the establishment of a youth affiliate entity such as Sigma Beta Club are many. Sigma Beta Clubs, which consist of young male students, primarily of African Americans and minority descent between the ages of 8-18, are provided with opportunities to meet with each other on a regular basis outside the school environment to discuss their developmental interests and related problems. It also provides Sigma Beta Club members the opportunity to meet with college and professional men of Phi Beta Sigma, with the goal and objective of introducing them to Sigma men’s professional and positive life experiences through its national mentoring programs and projects, involving a “Job Mentoring Program” in Bigger and Better Business, a “Tutorial/Enrichment Program” and “Sigma Education Time Program” in
Education, and the “Sigma Against Teenage Pregnancy Program Plus” (SATAPP) and “Health and Wellness Program” in Social Action.

Sigma Beta Clubs programs, projects and activities are structured to meet the needs of its members, while providing them with a well-rounded outlook which is necessary to meet
today’s societal needs. The enrichment programs are cultural, social and athletic in scope. They are designed to give its members a chance to be innovative through implementation of service projects, such as community clean-up and beautification, assistance to the elderly, and March of Dimes, thereby instilling in them a sense of self confidence and pride, and a feeling of accomplishment and involvement in community development.

History of the Sigma Beta Club

In 1950 Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity became the first Greek organization to develop a youth auxiliary group. Under the direction of Dr. Parlette L. Moore the Sigma Beta Club was founded. Brother Moore was concerned about our changing needs in our communities and recognized the important role that Sigma men could play in the lives of our youth.

The Sigma Beta Clubs’ four major principles of focus are on Culture, Athletics, Social and
Educational needs. The Sigma Beta Club offers a unique opportunity to develop values,
leadership skills and social/cultural awareness in our youth during their developmental years. Sigma Beta Club programs are geared to meet the needs of its members, but at the same time provide them with a well-rounded outlook that is needed to cope with today’s society. Phi Beta Sigma is confident that
investing in our youth today will produce the effective leaders of tomorrow.
